| Thinking virtual... addressing reality | |||||||||||||||
The
relentless increase in power densities in modern equipment means
very high localised heat dissipation. Today's Mission Critical Facility
(MCF) must incorporate these unprecedented conditions whilst tolerating
rapid changes in equipment layout.
Thermal / environmental management of equipment within the MCF is
fast becoming one of the most serious risks to availability.
|
|||||||||||||||
The
Communication Gap: Thermal / environmental management within the MCF is no longer the domain of the Building Services Industry alone, it must be considered in combination with the cooling requirements of each individual piece of equipment housed within the facility. The issue is exacerbated by a lack of effective communication between the equipment manufacturers and the building services industry. |
The
Contradiction in Requirements:
The MCF is designed to protect the equipment housed within it for many years. However, equipment layout changes occur on a weekly or even daily bases. This incompatibility in timescales, combined with increasing power densities has created new challenges in the day to day operation of the MCF. |

| The Only Solution: | |||||||||||||||
| All of these issues can be addressed using the concept of: THE VIRTUAL FACILITY | |||||||||||||||
|
The Virtual Facility (VF) is the full 3D representation of a data centre, enabling a holistic approach addressing the design, and the ongoing thermal and asset management. It comprises three elements: The Virtual facility allows for scientific validation and optimisation during the design of the facility. It provides the owner / operator with the ability to stay one step ahead of events. |
||||||||||||||
In Design, The VF enables the scientific validation and optimisation of decisions such as: * Floor
void depth |
In
Operation, the VF enables the owner / operator to: * Walk-through a full 3-Dimensional inventory of all equipment housed within the facility * Visualise the temperature distribution and airflow at both room and cabinet level. * Track historic changes in equipment layout * Preview possible future equipment deployment * Evaluate the thermal / environmental impact of these options prior to deployment. |
