Direct Liquid Cooling of the OpenCompute Project Reference Design
The OpenCompute Project has ushered in a new wave of Data Center Design/Operational strategies by releasing its technologies as open source hardware. The goal of the Project is to develop servers and data centers following the model traditionally associated with open source software projects. This presentation highlights the benefits of the OpenCompute reference design and the growing importance of design integration across the entire physical scale of the data center from chip to facility.
Integrated design will be increasingly necessary to enable a fixed infrastructure (the facility) to accommodate without issue multiple generations of IT upgrades and flexible IT configurations and performance specifications.
This presentation also puts the open source hardware concept into practice by using the OpenCompute reference design as a starting point for a direct liquid cooled data center design concept that is currently in operation at National Renewable Energy Labs (NREL). NREL is a 10 MW facility with a PUE of around 0.7 (PUE is less than 1.0 due to reuse of generated heat for lab and office spaces).
